Rise of the Roman Republic
 In 509 BCE, Roman
nobility overthrew last
Etruscan king and began
a republic: all citizens
who voted held power
 Built Roman forum –
political and civic center
 Who was a citizen?
 Patricians (wealthy,
privileged)
 Some foreigners
 EVENTUALLY, Plebeians
(commoners)
Rome Expands!
 STRONG ARMY facilitates expansion
 Sometimes crushes enemies; sometimes granted citizenship
 “Piecemeal” process; not built off existing empire
 Punic Wars (264-146BCE) – Romans clashed with Carthage
 Three conflicts between 264 and 146BCE
 Arose from economic competition and grew into struggle for supremacy in
the region
 Third Punic War: Carthage destroyed, Rome rules the region & becomes
naval power
