• Legend—twin sons of the god Mars & a Latin
princess were abandoned, raised by a shewolf and built the city of Rome
• Rome is built on seven hills on a curve of the
Tiber River, the center point of Italy & the
Mediterranean Sea
• Location, Location,Location
Roman Republic
• 509 BC Romans drive out the last Etruscan
king & claim they will never be ruled by a king
again, the Roman Republic is born
• All free-born males are citizens & can vote
• 2 main social classes patricians & plebeians
• Plebeians revolt and force reforms that create
the Twelve Tables
