How People Pay for Health Services
Health Care Expenses
• Many families have some form of health insurance.
• To maintain membership in such a plan, the insured person
pays a periodic premium, or fee, for medical coverage.
• In conventional insurance plans, the insured person pays for
doctor visits out of pocket. The insurance company then
reimburses a fixed portion of the cost of the visit.
• A deductible is an amount a member must pay in an out-ofpocket expense before the plan will start reimbursing for
health care services.
