Seminar Rules and Structure
Usual format of seminar will involve discussion of a concept and
then responding to questions on the concept.
Posting a wrong answer will not negatively affect your participation
grade. It is more important that you try to participate rather than
simply watch.
Social posts (It is raining, Hi, Bye, My car broke down) will not help
your participation grade.

Statistics
The science of collecting, organizing, analyzing and
interpreting data in order to make decisions
Data
Information from observations, counts, measurements or responses
Population
Collection of all data that are of interest
Sample
Subset of the data of a population
Try It Yourself 1, page 5
Parameter
numerical description of population characteristic
Statistic
numerical description of sample characteristic
Try It Yourself 2, pg 6
Branches of Statistics
Descriptive
Involves organization, summarization and display of data
Inferential
Involves using a sample to draw conclusions about a population. Uses
probability.
Try it Yourself 3, pg 7
Types of Data
Quantitative data
has a value or a numerical measurement for which you can calculate sums,
products and other numerical calculations.

Qualitative data
is grouped into a category or group. Sums, products or other numerical
calculations do not mean anything.
Example 1, pg 11
Levels of Data Measurement
Nominal:
Data is put in categories
Ordinal:
Data is put in ordered categories
Interval:
Data can be ordered and calculations made
Ratio:
Data can be ordered, calculations made, and it has an absolute zero point
Example 3, pg 13
Statistical Design
Data Collection
Observational study
Experiment
Simulation
Survey
Confounding variable
When experimenter cannot tell the difference between
effects of different factors on a variable
page 20
Random Sampling Techniques
Simple random sample
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected
Stratified sample
Sample has members from each segment of the population
Cluster sample
Sample has all members of one or more of naturally occurring subgroups
of the population
Systematic sample
Each member is assigned a number and ordered; then a starting number
is randomly selected
Example 4, pg 24
Non-Random Sampling
