MATH 151 Assessment
Students who successfully
complete this course will be
able to:
(a) Understand fundamental
mathematical principles and
concepts and use them to
perform related
mathematical computations.
(b) Formulate problems,
express problems
symbolically, develop
problem-solving strategies,
and analyze solutions.
(c) Apply mathematics
appropriately to diverse
problems.

Precalculus Spring 2007
To measure Criterion (a)
Variations of the following problem:
Use the Remainder Theorem to determine if (x + 1) is a factor of
P(x)=x 203 +13. Explain your answer in one or two complete
sentences.
To measure Criterion (b)
Variations of the following problem:
A salesman drives from city A to city B, a distance of 90 miles, at a
steady speed x. and arrives in less than one hour. He then increases
his speed by 15 mi/h to drive the 125 miles from city B to city C. If
the second leg of the trip took 10 more minutes than the first leg, how
many hours did it take him to drive from A to B?
To measure Criterion (c)
Variations of the following problem:
A culture starts with 8,000 bacteria and doubles every 40 minutes.
a) Find a function that models the number of bacteria at time t.
b) After how many minutes will there be 40,000 bacteria?
