Scrapbooking, the Process
Challenges
My student is
Nonverbal
Uses a communication book which was started on
the first day of the year.
He has severe behavioral challenges
Severe PICA
I had to ask myself what would be a good way for him
to showcase what he can do.
He loves pictures and seeing himself in pictures. So I
asked him if he would like to create scrapbook pages
to show his mom what he can do. He replied yes
using his communication book.
Since he had a lot of photos taken for the GAA, I let
him choose the pictures that he wanted to showcase
on his pages. He chose his pictures for each page.
He then glued them down on his pages.
Writing
My student then had to write about what he was doing
under each picture on his pages.
This was done by asking him yes/no questions and
getting him to respond using his communication book.
Example: E are you flying a kite? His response was
“no” He was asked another question where the answer
was no. Then he was asked, “Are you mixing up
batter?” he responded “yes” with his communication
device.
He then glued down the sentence strip that said, “Here
I am mixing up our cake batter.”
This process was done to complete the writing part for
his pages.
Decorations
As with any scrapbook pages, there has to be some
sort of decorations on it.
E was given several items to choose from to decorate
his pages. He chose the ocean them foam pieces that
he stuck to his page.
Practicing
To practice for the meeting we would show the pages to
E. and then ask him to show us the picture where he
was mixing the batter. Then had him show the picture
where he was entering his lunch number. His lunch
number is one of his IEP goals. He pointed to it.
Practicing for the IEP meeting was done in small
increments which were no longer than a five minute
span with a five minute break in between.
