I. WHAT IS
COMMUNICATION?

Communication occurs in large group, small
groups, and between two people.
B. Formal Communication
i. prepared speeches or conversations (sermon, lecture,
presentation).
C. Informal Communication
i. everyday conversation
II. COMMUNICATION
TYPES
A. Verbal
i. sending a message in words, including writing.
B. Nonverbal
i.
sending a message without using words
ii. About 80% of communication is nonverbal.
C. Intrapersonal
i. communicating with oneself
D. Interpersonal
i. communicating between two people.
III. COMMUNICATION
FAILURE
A. Communication involves three messages:
i. The intended message is the exact message the
speaker wants to convey
ii. The expressed message is the actual words said.
iii. The received message is what the listener perceives in
his ears and mind.
iv. A breakdown in communication can occur due to
several external sources: noise, defective hearing, lack
of attention by the listener, and/or incorrect speech
function on the part of the speaker.
