Building Health Skills
What are health skills?
• Health skills are specific tools and strategies to maintain,
protect, and improve all aspects of your health.
• Also known as Life skills
• Pg. 35 figure 1.2
Communication Skills
• Interpersonal skills- the exchange of thoughts, feelings,
and beliefs between two or more people
• Strengthen interpersonal skills…….
Use “I” messages to express your feelings
Communicate with respect and caring
Be an active listener
Refusal Skills
• Communication strategies that can help you say no when
you are urged to take part in behaviors that are unsafe or
unhealthful.

Conflict Resolution
• The process of ending a conflicts through cooperation and
problem solving.
Stepping away from an argument
Allowing the conflict to subside
Using good interpersonal communication skills
Maintaining an attitude of respect for yourself as well as
for the other person
