What is e-Justice ?
• e-Justice can be defined as the use of
technology, information and communication
to improve access of citizens to justice and
effective judicial action
• a key element in the modernisation of judicial
systems
• the aim is to facilitate access to justice across
the European Union
Work at EU level
• the first multiannual European e-Justice
Action Plan adopted in 2008 for the period
2009-2013
• new Action Plan to be prepared this year for
post-2013
• Working Party on e-Law (e-Justice)
coordinates the work in this area in the
Council of the European Union
What is e-Justice Portal ?
• the e-Justice Portal was launched in 2010
• it currently offers information to citizens,
businesses and legal practitioners in 22
languages in 27 EU Member States
• the aim is to develop the Portal towards an
electronic one-stop-shop in the area of justice
What are the functions of the Portal ?
• to allow access to information in the field of
justice
• to allow communication between judicial
authorities
• to allow to go to court in civil and criminal
matters

Future Plans and Challenges in the
area of Land Registers
• new large scale project on interconnection of
EU Member States’ Land Registers about to

the European Commission
