The 2 Main Functions of Nonverbal
Communication:
A. Relates to verbal communication in 3 ways:
a. Reinforces a verbal message
b. Contradicts a verbal message
c. Substitutes a verbal message
B. Conveys feelings and relationship
Ex. Arms folded to show frustration. Smile to show
you like someone
Four Characteristics of Nonverbal
Communication:
1. Subconscious: We are not aware
of the message we send
nonverbally
2. Contextual: it depends on the
situation in which it occurs
Ex. What if he was a doctor rushing
to the aid of a heart attack victim
Four Characteristics of Nonverbal
Communication:
3. Ambiguous (unclear): open
to interpretation & often
confusing (ex: talking w/
arms folded)
4. Cultural: nonverbal
messages can mean
something else in another
culture (ex: handshake,
kiss, eye contact, attire)
