Communication in Clinical
Supervision
Chapter 6
Communication Techniques
In order to encourage teacher reflection
and decision-making, the observer
needs to listen more than talk
Active listening techniques such as
acknowledgement that you are hearing
what is said is helpful; paraphrase
occasionally what you’ve heard
Communication Techniques
In order to encourage deeper thinking,
the observer may need to ask a
question to clarify or dig deeper
Avoid jumping in to ‘solve the problem’;
the observer needs to wait before giving
advice
Be sure to praise the growth seen and
develop trust through verbal praise
Communication Techniques
When the observer sees something that
the teacher doesn’t perceive as
problematic there may be some
dissonance
Consider the role of the supervisor in
guiding the discussion so that the ‘issue’
can be analyzed and interpreted
Communication Techniques
It is important to acknowledge the
emotions and feelings that dissonance
may create in the teacher. However to
bring about change….
Ask gentle, probing questions that will
enable the teacher to accept the behaviors
that need to be changed to improve
student learning
