 The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand effective
communication, the barriers that may exist and the ways to
overcome these.

 When looking at the concept of communication you must
take into account various aspects.

Context of communication
 Context of communication are the context/situation during which
the communicative exchange is occurring,
 Context can be as follows:

One to one communication
 Conversation which occurs between two individuals can be
in a form of a greeting, conversation/information exchange
and even a farewell.
 In order to engage in an effective one to one exchange, you
must ensure that you have created a good feeling which will
enable the person to feel relaxed.
Group communication
 Why do people choose to engage in group discussions within health and
social care settings ?
 Why is there a need for a group leader?
 Why is it important to come prepared and briefed on the context of the
meeting when taking part in a group discussion?
 Why is it important to be able to take turns?
 Why should the room laid out so that everyone is able to make eye
contact?

 Language community is the important concept when looking
at communication between professional people and those

 Key issue is understanding, when two professionals from 2
different health and social care agencies communicate.
 In this context there is always a chance that there could be
some misunderstanding 2 agencies when dealing with the
same service user thus messages must be clear and detailed.
