Confucius (ca. 551)
• Born during a time when
China was plagued by
division, chaos, warfare
• Scholar; hoped to advise a
ruler
• Wandered to courts
talking to rulers about
how to govern
• Became a teacher
• “The Analects:” collection
of his sayings/beliefs

1. “While you do not know about
life, how can you know about
death?”
2. “Lead the people by laws and regulate
them by punishments, and the people will
simply try to keep out of jail, and the will
have no sense of shame. Lead the people
by virtue, and they will have a sense of
shame and become good.”

• Little interest in religious matters; interested in
worldly goals
