End of WWI
11/11/1918
The United States enters WWI
• April 2nd, 1917- The United States declares
war on the Central Powers.
• Submarine Warfare, Zimmerman Telegram, etc.
• Fear of a German controlled Europe
• Rest of 1917- Americans prepare for War.
• Millions of American Troops are recruited and trained.
• The entire manufacturing power of the United States is
put towards War. (Weapons, Ammo, Planes, Ships,
etc.)
Spring 1918
• March 1918- American troops arrive in France
• Called the “American Expeditionary Force” (A.E.F)
• Commanded by General John “Blackjack” Pershing
• Americans join the fight• Americans would participate in heavy fighting in France
and Western Germany throughout 1918.
• ~115,000 casualties in ~ 8 months of fighting
1918
• Last months of the War• American soldiers help break the stalemate on the
Western Front.
• Allied Forces (American, British, French) win key
victories, despite suffering heavy casualties.
• Germany is pushed back to their own borders.
• October, 1918• Austria-Hungary withdraws from the War
• Political revolution, lack of support for the War,
incredibly high casualties.
November 1918- The End of WWI
• November 1918The Allies prepare to invade Germany.
• Revolution in GermanyThe German people want the War to end.
• Nov. 7th Keizer Wilhelm II steps down
• Nov. 9th Germany agrees to an Armistice
• Armistice – an agreement to stop fighting
• November 11th, 1918 11:11am:
The armistice goes into effect. The fighting stops
Peace Begins
• Woodrow Wilson – 28th President of the U.S.
• Wilson will be the leader in peace
negotiations.
• Wilson’s Plan: The 14 points• 14 compromises to maintain peace in Europe
• Disarming, peaceful disputes to problems etc.
• League of Nations• A group of powerful nations that would work
together to maintain peace.
Treaty of Versailles
• Treaty of Versailles – June 1919
• Officially ends WWI
• Blames Germany for the entire conflict
• Forces Germany to pay billions in reparations
• Reparation- payment for insult or injury
• Breaks up Austria-Hungary into multiple nations
• Takes territory from Germany and Russia
• Disarms Germany• not allowed to have a Navy or standing Army
• Germany is not allowed any overseas colonies
• Germany will suffer greatly from this Treaty
Opposition at home
• The United States will never sign the
Treaty of Versailles
• Many Americans disagree with the Treaty
• Politicians do not want to join the
League of Nations
• Politicians fear that the United States will be
drawn into future conflicts
• 1921 – The United States signs separate treaties
with the Central Powers.
