Imperialism in the Pacific

America seeks to expand the
size of the nation
• Begin looking overseas for

American Acquires Alaska
• William Seward Secretary
of State purchases Alaska
from Russia in 1867 for
7.2 million
• .02 cents an acre
• 1884 Alaska is annexed
American Imperialism
Seward’s Ice Box or
Seward’s Folly – name that
was mockingly given to the
purchase of Alaska.
Many people felt that it
was a waste of money, that
Alaska was nothing but
tundra
The Annexation of Hawaii
•
1800’s American missionaries in Hawaii
• Descendants started sugar plantations, late 1800’s wealthy American
planters dominated Hawaii’s economy
•
Queen Liliuokalani felt Americans had too much power and tried to limit
their influence.
•
American sugar planters revolt in 1893 and overthrew the Queen and set
up their own government.

When the spanish american war begins
the U.S. army only has 28,000 men.

Leads a march on Santiago’s port and
the march up San Juan Hill they
attacked the spanish on July 1 1898

The War in the Caribbean
•
August 12, 1898 Spain signed a truce
to U.S. secretary of state
•
Although Americans declared war
to secure Cuba’s independence
U.S. leaders began demanding
that Spain also give up its other
colonies.
•
Treaty of Paris in 1898 makes
Spain give up Cuba, Puerto Rico,
Guam and the Philippines to the
U.S.
The United States and China
•
In 1899, Secretary of State John Hay asked
nations involved in the region to follow an
Open Door Policy
•
This means no single country should
have a monopoly on trade with China.
•
Boxers Rebellion- 1900 Chinese resentment
led to a violent uprising known as the Boxer
Rebellion
•
The rebellion was put down by an
international force from 8 different
nations
•
About 230 foreigners and thousands
of chinese christians and rebels were
killed as a result.
The Panama Canal
•
A canal connecting the Atlantic and
Pacific would mean that U.S. ships
would not have to travel around the
coast of South America.
•
The Canal is originally a part of
Colombia, but they were unwilling to
give up the land so Roosevelt sends
the navy to support a revolution in this
area and a new nation of Panama is
created 1903
•
1921 The U.S. pays Colombia 25 million
for the lost of Panama.
Building the Panama Canal
•
Building the Canal was a huge challenge
• Land was swampy causing
Malaria which was an infectious
disease marked by cycles of chills
and fever
• 44,000 workers
• Cost between 350- 380 million to
build
• Most expensive construction
project in the world
• More than 5,500 canal workers
died from disease or accident.
•
The Canal opened in 1914
U.S. Involvement in Latin America
•
Interest in the resources of their
southern neighbors in South America.
•
Roosevelt’s foreign policy “ Speak
softly and carry a big stick”
•
Monroe Doctrine- The policy that
barred european nations from
intervening in Latin America.
• Roosevelt Corollary added in
1905 authorized the United
States to act as a “policeman” in
the region.
