What’s Happening in The United
States
No League of Nations
 Nativism and a movement towards
Isolationism-TWO BIG OCEANS
 Unions and organized labor were not well
liked and folks wanted a “Return to
Normalcy”
 Jobs were tough to find for returning
veterans and women had to leave the jobs
they had held

Fear of Communism
American’s were terrified of the threat of
“communism” which they’d heard about in
Russia
 Bolsheviks in Russia called for global
revolution and “power to the proletariat”
 Drastic Measures were called for

Who Was Afraid?
The Government targeted communists and
anarchists-”The Red Scare”
 The Palmer Raids** were instituted by the
F.B.I. to targets suspects participants
 They trampled civil rights and jail suspects
without legal counsel
 They achieved nothing

Sacco and Vanzetti
Two Italian immigrants and anarchists
 Nativist fears pinned a murder on this two
men
 Targeted because of Italian ancestry and
political beliefs
 Found guilty of murder and sentenced to
die (Page 414)

Keep America for Americans!

The Nativist movement
Unskilled labor needed less in the USA, so we
don’t need immigrants
They are communists and anarchists
The Ku Klux Klan will emerge again to to
threaten change in the USA
Keep blacks in their place, destroy saloons, get
rid of Jews and Catholics
4.5 Millions Klansmen in 1924
