Cardiovascular Review
Test Tomorrow
Are you ready?
Functions
Your
blood circulates
throughout your entire
body. It comes in
contact with every single
cell.
What
cells?
Why?
does it bring to the
The Blood Brings… Because…
Food
Oxygen
To
support respiration, in
order to create energy so
the body can do stuff.
It also Brings…
 Chemical
messages (AKA
Hormones)
 These messages allow the
cells in one part of your body
to communicate with cells in all
other parts of your body.
What
does it remove
from cells?
Why?
It removes…
 Wastes.
 Because
if wastes build up
they can poison cells, leading
to their death and therefore the
death of the entire organism.
Sound Familiar????
Want
candy???
Tell me EXACTLY what
this relates to from
earlier this year. (Hint
there are three.)
Heart
Structure
Please make me feel like I taught
you something :’o)
Name
the 4 chambers the
heart.
What divides the right side
from the left side? (From lab
yesterday / in ya nose!)
Chambers and a place to get
Pierced!!!
Right Atrium,
Right
Ventricle, Left Atrium,
Left ventricle.
Septum!
Wow, what a little atrium you
have?!?!
Why
are both atria much
smaller than the
ventricles?
It’s a matter of distance.
 They
are smaller b/c they need
much less muscle b/c they
only have to pump the blood a
short distance from the atria to
the ventricles.
Atria Sm’atria, how bout dem
ventricles?
 Your
right and left ventricles
are unique in structure
compared to each other. This
uniqueness in structure
represents their differences in
function.
I ask you…
 Explain
the difference in structure
b/w the left and right ventricles.
 How does this difference in
structure b/w the ventricles,
represent a difference in function?
The wall of the left ventricle is much
thicker than that of the right ventricle. This
means that the LV is more muscular than
the RV.
 This is because the LV must pump to the
entire body, while the RV only pumps to
the lungs, which are much smaller and
closer than the entire body.

There are two circuits in the
heart…
The
Pulmonary Circuit
that pumps from the RV
to the ?????
The Systemic Circuit that
pumps from the LV to the
??????
Keepin’ time….
 The
heart contains a small patch
of cells that release a regular
pulse of electricity to the heart.
 What is its name?
 WHY
does it do this???????
Just in case your notes on blood
are mediocre at best or overly
extensive…..




Plasma- Mixture of Water, nutrients, enzymes,
wastes, and other materials.
Red Blood Cells- Carry oxygen throughout the
body. Contain Hemoglobin, which binds to
oxygen and carbon dioxide.
White Blood Cells- Defend the body from
invaders. Long lifespan, staying in the body
from months to years.
Platelets- Responsible for sealing breaks in the
circulatory system.
Finally…
You better be able to describe the flow of
blood through the heart beginning at the
right atrium and ending at the right atrium.
 Also be able to describe the condition of
the blood at every point in the heart, as
well as what happens to it in the body and
the lungs

