Vision for the Unit
By creating this unit I want to:
• Find ways to integrate technology into science.
During this unit, I want my students to:
• develop 21st century skills by collaborating
with peers and drawing conclusions to answer
unit questions
• Solving problems and making decisions about
their experiment.
• Communicating with others in a presentation.
Unit Summary
As students work in Code Blue, they become
specialists in one of the six different systems of
the body (the circulatory, respiratory, immune,
muscular/skeletal, digestive, and nervous
systems). They learn it functions and parts and
teach what they learn to their classmates.
Students also learn about several public health
issues, how each affects the body, and how
problems associated with these health issues can
be prevented or avoided.
Unit Plan
Gauging Student Needs
Purpose: To gather information about what students
already know and what they want to know about how
the human body works
KWL Chart
What I want to learn from my students?
– I want to find out what they already know about the
Unit Questions and what they know about setting up
experiments.
How the assessment information helps plan for
upcoming activities in the unit?
– If students have misconceptions about how to set up
experiments, I can provide scaffolds. If students have
different levels of understanding about the importance
of the systems of the body, I can provide various
resources. We will revisit this assessment throughout
the unit for students to add their knowledge.
Curriculum-Framing Questions
Essential Question:
• How do different components work together to enable
us to survive and interact with our environment?
Unit Questions:
• What body system do you think is most important and
why?
• How do you think public health issues that we face
today affect the body?
Content Questions:
• What are the components and functions of each of the
six systems of the body?
• What ways can we reduce the risk of health
Assessments and Rubrics
• Students will be given a checklist to
follow to keep them on track during
their research.
Research Checklist
• Students will create a PowerPoint
demonstrating what they learned about
their body system.
