Other Players in the IMMUNE
RESPONSE
Specialized Cells are Circulated
via the Lymphatic System
ANTIGEN-ANTIBODY
• Antibody—Protein known as an
immunoglobin. Produced by the B cells.
An effector of the immune response.
• Antigen—ANTIbody GENerator. A foreign
macromolecule that elicits an immune
response.
• The specificity between the shapes of
antigens and antibodies are the basis of the
immune response.
Chemical Signals
• Chemokines—Molecules secreted by
epithelial cells & monocytes to attract
phagocytes to an area.
• Complement System—20 serum proteins
that act to lyse microbes.
• Interferon—Protein secreted by virus
invaded cells to warn neighboring cells.
Chemical Signals
• Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC)Glycoprotein molecules that mark cells as
“self”.
• Most polymorphic genes known—we all
have unique combinations of MHC
molecules.
• Cytotoxic T cells bind to MHC I molecules
• Helper T cells bind to MHC II molecules
