Conquistador and Pre
Columbian civilization

• 5.2 Identify the three major pre-Columbian civilizations
that existed in Central and South America (Maya, Aztec,
and Inca) and their locations. Describe their political
structures, religious practices, and use of slaves.
• 5.4 Explain why the Aztec and Inca civilizations declined
in the 16th century.

• D. the effects of European diseases, particularly
smallpox, throughout the Western hemisphere
Aztecs
• Cortez traveled with 500 people and 16 horses to defeat the Aztecs
in Tenochtitlan.
• Different Native tribes helped the Spanish defeat the Aztecs
because they captured other Indians for sacrifice or slavery.
• Tenochtitlan was a weird city because it was built in a lake.
• The Aztecs were polytheistic (they believed in many gods)
• The Aztecs and their empire Montezuma greeted Cortez mistaking
him as Quetzacoatl a god.
• Cortez took Montezuma prisoner, and after ransom decapitated him.
• The Spanish conquered Tenochtitlan and civilized a new city.

Mayas
The ancient Mayas civilization was made up of cites.
•
• The trade off of food and goods and a stone of jade was important to
Mayas city life
• Maya cities had temples and markets were people bought and sold
goods.
• Many children, lived just outside the city.
• Corn was the most important in a diet.

Incas
The Inacas civilization was gigantic (around 20 million).
•
• They were powerful and organized.
• Incs were easily conquered by Pizzaro because they were currently
in a civil war (when two or more groups in one contry are fighting
against each other.)
• Atahualpa the Incan leader was captured and held for ransom.
• Pizarro asked for ransom to get Atahualpa back.
• The Incas did not care about gold and silver as much so they paid
the ransom.
• Pizzaro did not keep his will and Eventually splattered him.

Cortez
• Cortez pretended to friend the Aztecs.
• The Spaniards were amazed by the size of the Aztec capitol.
• The people dressed very in great finery with gold and jewels and
Cortez and his men were giving room in a beautiful palace.
• Later When the empire visited the Spanish took him as prisoner.
• Cortez was out numbered so he could not leave any stayed for
months.
• Cortez killed there leader Montezuma by planning a giant attack on
the Aztecs.
• By the middle of 1521, after 3 years of fighting, the Spanish
controlled all of Mexico.
Pizzaro
• After Pizzaro a Spanish conquistador heard tales of riches in the
Andes mountains of Peru.
• In 1531 when Pizzaro and de Soto finally arrived at Caxamarca
where the Inca Atahualpa was staying he was expecting them.
• When Pizzaro came down the valley they were at the Incas vast
army and retreated.
• Then invited the empire over the next day.
• They waited all day in till finally at sunset.
• The Incan leader refused to become Christian so the Spanish
lunched a sneak attack and captured Atahualpa.
• All Incas and Aztecs were shipped to Spain and the Spain became
the richest and most powerful nation on earth.
The Spanish changed life in central and
South America forever because they
forced everyone else to speak Spanish
and become Christian, that is why you see
a lot of Christians and Spanish speakers.
