What year was the Emancipation
Proclamation passed by
Pres. Abraham Lincoln?
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation
Proclamation to free the slaves in the Confederate States.
What was the Atlanta Campaign?
• Sherman’s attack on Atlanta
• began on May 1864 -September 1864
• Sherman burned all the Confederate supplies
along with many of the city’s buildings.
Sherman made the statement: “War is cruelty, and you cannot
refine it; and those who brought war on our country deserve all
the curses and maledictions a people can pour out.” What
evidence from the article supports his attitude about the Civil
War?

What was the March to the Sea?
It was the destructive, march that Sherman and his

What is a telegraph and why did
Sherman use this technology?
A telegraph is a machine that sends electric signals
over wires.

he and his army had captured Atlanta
In June 1864, the two armies (Grant’s and Lee’s) faced
each other in Richmond, fighting for almost a year.
Neither side would give up.
What character trait would you use to describe each of
these Generals?

What were some of the challenges that the
Confederate army faced while fighting
against Gen. Grant’s army?
• Grant’s army would not give up (persistent)
• The Union was able to receive resources-a steady supply of food,
equipment, and soldiers.
• Confederate soldiers went hungry, and some began to desert.
To desert means to leave the army without permission.
Lee and Grant once fought together in the Union
Army. Did Grant still respect Lee despite the
fact that he was a Confederate soldier?
