Vocabulary
Union – Another word for the United States
Secede – To separate from the rest of the Union
Manufacturing – Process of making goods
Emancipation – becoming free
Page 124 - A Country Divided:
In 1860 Americans elected Abraham Lincoln to be President.
Many southerners disagreed with Abraham Lincoln.
They wanted to secede.
People thought Abe would end slavery
In 1861 11 southern states left the union
They made a new country called Confederate States of America
The Confederate States of America = The Confederacy
April 12, 1861 Confederate troops attacked a fort in South Carolina - The Civil War began

The Union started with a small army
President Lincoln asked for 75,000 to join the army
Ohio's Governor, William Dennison said Ohio must lead___
30,000 Ohioans joined the Union army
African Americans also joined the Union Army
Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman were great generals.
Grant was put in charge of the Union army
Sherman captured Atlanta, Georgia

Railroads were used to ship war materials and Union troops
One of Ohio's most important industry was the iron

The Eagle Iron Works in Cincinnati manufactured cannons and reconditioned muskets
Ohio's timber industry provided wood to make ships
Mills made processed grain and agricultural products
Ferdinand Schumacher developed oatmeal cereal
Salt was used to preserve meat
Uniforms and Tents were made from wool
Coal was mined and powered trains and steamboats
Trains and steamboats moved troops and materials

The Confederate General, Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland
The Union won the battle so Abraham Lincoln issued The
Emancipation Proclamation
African Americans became free
After the battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg the Union realized
they would win.
Lee surrendered in April 1865
