THE CIVIL WAR
ANACONDA PLAN
• This was the Union “Northern” plan to win the Civil
War.
• This plan was created by Union General Winfield
Scott
• This plan had three parts
PART 1 DIVIDE THE SOUTH
• Control the Mississippi River
• This would prevent the Confederacy from being
able to send supplies across the river
PART 2 BLOCKADE THE COAST
• The Union Navy would prevent the Confederacy
from receiving outside help and sending supplies
along the coast.
• Also the blockade would prevent the south from
sending crops to England to make money
PART 3 CAPTURE THE CAPITOL
• The goal for the Union army was to capture
Richmond which was the capital of the
Confederacy.
• This would help lead to the surrender of the
Confederate army
BATTLE OF BULL RUN 1861
• This was the first major battle of the Civil War
• This was a Confederate victory
• This was the battle where Confederate General
Thomas Jackson earned the nickname “Stonewall”
for his bravery in battle
BATTLE OF BULL RUN
• The public watched this battle while enjoying a
picnic
• Both sides realized after this battle that the Civil War
was going to last a lot longer then was originally
thought
• Most people thought the Civil War would only last a
few months
BATTLE OF ANTIETAM 1862
• There was no clear winner of this battle
• The North claimed they won this battle so that they
could issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
• This battle lasted for only one day
• This one day resulted in the most injuries and deaths
in American history about 23,000 people
BATTLE OF ANTIETAM
• Here are important spots from the battlefield:
• The Cornfield: Both armies battled for control of this
important part of the battlefield
• Burnsides Bridge: The Union Army crossed a bridge
while the Confederate solders waited and attacked
them.
• Bloody Lane: The Confederate Army waited on the
high ground for the Union Army to attack across the
lane.
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
• This document freed the slaves in the Confederate
States only
• This meant that if the Union Army won the war
slavery would quickly end in the south
This document changed the purpose of the Civil War.
The Civil War is now a war to preserve the Union AND
End slavery
Impact of the Emancipation Proclamation
• The original purpose for the Civil War for the Union
soldiers was to keep the country united
• The Emanc Proc changed the purpose of the Civil
War
• The new purpose of the Civil War was now to END
SLAVERY and preserve the union
THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG
• Lincoln picked a new General in charge Burnside.
• Burnside waited for pontoon bridges to arrive
before he started his attack
• This was the first Civil War battle that took place in
the streets of a town
• The Confederate Army had a strong defensive
position to stop the Union attack
IMPACT BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG
• The Confederate Army won the battle of
Fredericksburg because of their strong defensive
position
• Robert E Lee gained increased confidence in his
army because of the victory
• Lincoln replaced Burnside as commander because
he lost the battle.
Battle of Chancellorsville
• This battle is Robert E Lee’s greatest victory in the
Civil War
• The Confederate army was outnumbered 2 to 1
and still won this battle
• The Confederate army was divided in half to
confuse the Union army about where the attack
would take place.
Death of Stonewall
• Confederate general Stonewall Jackson died from
the wounds he received at this battle
• He was wounded on accident by Confederate
Soldiers
• Jackson returned from scouting the Union army and
was shot when he returned back to the
Confederate army
