• Making an exhibition usually deals with what
Hans calls “rules of the game” (pg.60)
• When setting up exhibits, the curator will give a
certain amount of space to the artist to set-up
• Idea that instead of giving artists certain
amount of space that they are given certain
amounts of time
• Now, the artists are focusing on putting their
work in time and not space.
• Point of setting this up is that instead of the
audience walking through looking at the art that
the art instead comes to the audience.
• Libretto: “the text of an opera or other long vocal work” (google)
• With a libretto can allow an exhibition to be either restaged or reenacted
because it works on a time scale
• Can be staged in new places by a new generation with repetition
• Brought to question about the score, which is more familiar to music yet fall
under libretto as it can be reenacted
“
THE SCORE, THE SCORE
• Pierre Boulez
• Was a French composer and conductor
• Explained that the reason that no one has
really played his scores by other people than
him is that of the difficulty and missing
elements that are needed in order to play
• Hans applies this to exhibitions with how to
replay or restage it and how there would still
be something missing
PG.61
”
• “The open stage offers the chance to address a direct
experience of an event without sub-media.” (pg.63)
• How Hans and Philippe are responsible for the exhibit and
that the artists trust is because it is Hans and Philippe
• Title is a metaphor for a delivering messages but in this case
the thing being delivered is the exhibition with the main idea
is that there is no walking around in a exhibit or gallery,
