What are the laws regarding
copyright?
How can we make sure that our
footage/products do not use
copyrighted material and are not
copyrighted.
About the Laws…






They were created to give people control over how/whether
their material is used in broadcasts, public performance,
copies, adaptations and renting/lending copies to the public
Things that can be copyrighted literature, music, art, sound
recordings, broadcasts and films.
These rights are automatic whenever a person or company
creates work in any medium specified above.
To qualify for the laws the work must be original, show a
certain level of labour and skill.
Names, titles, phrases and colours are not considered
things that can be copyrighted however things like a logo
would be.
The copyright claim can only be brought forward from the
creator of the work.
The Laws…
It is illegal to:

Copy the work, rent lend or give
out copies of the work freely or
for personal financial gain to the
public.

Perform/broadcast/show the work
in public without permission from
the creator of the work.

Adapt the work to make it seem
your own.
The creator also has
the right to be clearly
identified as the
author. They also have
the right to object to it
being used where they
don’t want it.
You are allowed to:

Use the work for private research
and study

Perform, copy and lend for
educational purposes

Criticize and report on the work

Copy and lend the work (if you
are a librarian)

Use it for Royal C Commissions,
Statutory Enquiries, Judicial
Proceedings and Parliamentary
purposes

Time Shift (record a broadcast to
view it at a more convenient
time)

Produce a back up for your own
personal use

Play a sound recording for a non
profit organisation

70 years after the author dies
Films
70 years after the last
director/author/composer

50 years after the recording
was made.
50 years after the broadcast
was made
