the society that we live in can have
a large affect on the participation of
individuals.

age and status as you. This is
considered to be one of the most
powerful influences on any person –
‘peer pressure’.
Family
Family, especially parents, can greatly
influence participation.

seriously reduced, some does still exist.

Homework
Interview somebody at home (parent, brother
or sister, carer, grandparent etc). Find out
what has influenced them or put them off
taking part in sport. Find out about things
such as family, friends, teachers, areas
where they lived.
Questions such as:
Were they sporty when they were younger, and
if not any more why has this changed?
May help you.
Who do you most admire in Sport ?
WHY?
Role Models
• What is a role model?
• There are many role models in sport. Their following can
be due to a combination of their play, personality and
lifestyle. As there is more coverage these people
become trendsetters in their sport and can shape the
attitudes and behaviour of their fans.
• Top class sports people can encourage
people to participate in sport, play in a
certain way and also influence fashion
choices on and off the field.
