Sensation and
Perception
Hearing
Hearing
 SOUND: the brain’s interpretation of air
molecules pounding on the eardrum
 The vibrating eardrum causes tiny bones
to hit each other and carry the vibrations
on to the fluid in the cochlea
 Receptor cells are inside the Organ of
Corti. When the vibrations reach these,
the message is sent to the brain
Adaptation
 Like our other senses, hearing
undergoes adaptation—you get used to
sounds, volume, etc.
 Example: car radio doesn’t seem that
loud after a while, but when you turn on
the car later, it blasts
Hearing
 The Sense of hearing is BILATERAL
 Each ear sends messages to BOTH
cerebral hemispheres
 The primary destinations for auditory
messages are the temporal lobes
Dominant senses
 Vision and hearing dominate human
consciousness
 Most people rely on these two senses
the most
