Sensation and
Perception
Hearing
Hearing
SOUND: the brain’s interpretation of air
molecules pounding on the eardrum
The vibrating eardrum causes tiny bones
to hit each other and carry the vibrations
on to the fluid in the cochlea
Receptor cells are inside the Organ of
Corti. When the vibrations reach these,
the message is sent to the brain
Adaptation
Like our other senses, hearing
undergoes adaptation—you get used to
sounds, volume, etc.
Example: car radio doesn’t seem that
loud after a while, but when you turn on
the car later, it blasts
Hearing
The Sense of hearing is BILATERAL
Each ear sends messages to BOTH
cerebral hemispheres
The primary destinations for auditory
messages are the temporal lobes
Dominant senses
Vision and hearing dominate human
consciousness
Most people rely on these two senses
the most
