Tests you will participate in
Middle Ear Tests

A tympanogram will determine the health
and mobility your middle ear system


Acoustic reflexes will examine the function of
middle ear muscles
If these results are not normal, you may be
referred to the Student Health Center
Test of Inner Ear Health
For this test you will hear some tones at
different pitches
 Results will tell us about the health of the
organ of hearing in the inner ear
 This test may show damage from
exposure to loud sound before a regular
hearing test will
 Poor results mean you should be very
sure to protect your hearing

Hearing Test
This will be the typical “raise your hand
when you hear the beeps”
 This test will tell us if you have any hearing
loss
 If you do, we may recommend that you get
a full hearing test at an audiology clinic on
campus or in your home town

Genetic testing
We will collect cheek cells by rubbing a
swabbed stick inside each cheek
 These samples will be identified only by a
numbered code
 We will analyze these samples for specific
genes suspected of causing a
susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss

DoseBadge exposure
measurements
Your last task will be to wear a doseBadge
on your shoulder or on a hat for 2 school
days
 This device will measure the loudness of
your exposure all day long
 It will not record any sounds themselves,
like your music or speech

