I. Stalin Builds a Totalitarian
State
A. Totalitarianism
– 1. Takes total centralized state control over
every aspect of public and private life.
II. Stalin Seizes Control of the
Economy
A. An Industrial Revolution
– 1. Stalin wanted a command economy where
the government made all of the economic
decisions.
– 2. Five Year Plans to increase the output of
steel, coal, oil and electricity.
– 3. Consumer goods were limited, secret police
imprisoned or executed workers who did not
contribute.
B. Agricultural Revolution
– 1. Peasants were sent to collective farms and
forced to grow food for the state.
– 2. Wealthy peasants known as Kulaks resisted
but were either sent to Siberia, executed, or
sent to work camps.
– 3. 5-10 million peasants died.
III. Weapons of Totalitarianism
A. Police Terror
– 1. Stalin launched the Great Purge or a
campaign of terror.
– 2. People were executed for everything from a
negative comment to being a powerful
member of the communist party.
B. Indoctrination and Propaganda
– 1. Stalin used literature, films, and paintings
that served a political purpose-glorifying the
goals of the communist state.
– 2. Socialist realism was an artistic style that
praised Soviet life and Communist values.

IV. Daily Life Under Stalin
A. Women and Education
– 1. Women won equal rights.
– 2. Joined the labor force, but had to raise children to
be good, obedient citizens.
– 3. Children learned the virtues of the Communist
Party.
– 4. A premium on skilled and technical workers.
– 5. Stalins network of laws and regulations guided
every aspect of individual behavior.
