Who are IS? (also known as Daesh, ISIS or ISIL)
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Syria)

ISIS, ISIL or Islamic State want to create a new caliphate,
an area run by their own understanding of strict Islamic
society. This is widely rejected by the vast majority of
Muslims and especially by Islamic scholars.

caliphate would

A brief look at the some of the differences between
Britain and ISIS
Britain
IS Caliphate
- Democracy (people vote for who
they think should be the leader)
- All people irrespective of their
religious beliefs have the same
rights
- Alcohol and cigarettes are legal
- You can voice your opposition to
your leader
- A woman has the same rights as a
man
- Punishments for breaking the law
include: community service; fines;
prison.
- Ruled by a political and religious
leader (was not voted in)
- Only Sunni Muslims are treated well
- Alcohol and cigarettes are banned
- If you speak out against the
leadership you will be executed
- Women should only go outside
when absolutely necessary and
they must wear full Islamic dress
- Punishments for breaking the law
include: public beatings;
amputations; public executions
(including beheadings and
crucifixion).
ISIS have been responsible for multiple human rights abuses
including executions, rape and using child soldiers. The vast
majority of people they have killed have been Muslim.
So why do you people from the west join them?
The amount of propaganda released by groups like
ISIS is huge. They use social media profusely to recruit
people into travelling abroad, or to carry out attacks at
home.
However, headlines like this probably don’t help either.
Some of the UK press does push young people away by being
Islamophobic
Look at the following headline.

Muslim scholars have come out
in droves to condemn the
actions of groups like ISIS (also
known as ISIL or IS). Yet young
Muslims who struggle with the
deeply difficult arguments
based around Hadiths, the
Qur’an and Islamic tradition,
often rely on what they find
online instead to inform them.
This is concerning as anyone
can post online, and many
radical posts originate from
people who have a very limited
knowledge of Islam.

There’s no easy answer to the question why young
people put their lives at risk, and are willing to kill for
groups like ISIS. But here are some ideas.

Some are undoubtedly drawn into the propaganda.
Some people feel misunderstood and want a purpose. ISIS is tempting for
some because they say they can offer certainty- unfortunately the world is
not simple and someone might be tempted by their simplistic world view
where they claim they can answer everything with certainty
Some people might think it’s exciting- though people from the West are
usually just given the menial jobs (e.g. digging latrines) because they have
no military training and can’t speak the language
Many young people are recent converts who have no understanding of the
religion and don’t realise that ISIS break the most fundamental principles of
Islam
Young girls might be drawn into the idea of romanticism- of being matched
with a brave young soldier. They probably don’t realise they won’t be allowed
to leave the house. They are only allowed basic education (see last slide for
guidelines for women in Mosul). They might be used as sex slaves if they are
considered to be ‘spoils of war.’
They don’t know that the majority of people killed by ISIS are Muslim. Nor do
they know that it’s against Islam to kill civilians or ‘people of the book’
One of their main aims

Guidelines for civilians
After the self-proclaimed Islamic State captured cities in Iraq, ISIS issued
guidelines on how to wear clothes and veils. ISIS warned women in the
city of Mosul to wear full-face veils or face severe punishment. A cleric
told Reuters in Mosul that ISIS gunmen had ordered him to read out the
warning in his mosque when worshippers gathered. ISIS also banned
naked mannequins and ordered the faces of both male and female
mannequins to be covered. ISIS released 16 notes labelled "Contract of
the City", a set of rules aimed at civilians in Nineveh. One rule stipulated
that women should stay at home and not go outside unless
necessary. Another rule said that stealing would be punished by
amputation.[129][354]
In addition to banning the sale and use of alcohol (which is customary in
Muslim culture), militants have banned the sale and use of cigarettes
and hookah pipes. They have also banned "music and songs in cars,
at parties, in shops and in public, as well as photographs of people in
shop windows.”
Christians living in areas under ISIS control who wanted to remain in the
"caliphate" faced three options: converting to Islam, paying a religious
levy—jizya—or death.
What can you do?
The situation in Syria is something we
should care about.

If you want more information about the conflict, or about ISIS please
just ask your teacher. Special sessions can be arranged for Central
Foundation.
If you have any concerns about someone being drawn into thinking
that ISIS are helping people please speak to your teacher. You might
end up helping protecting someone from putting themselves in
extreme danger.
If you find, or are sent videos of violent acts like beheadings please tell
your teacher. You can also report it (details on the next slide) so that
young people don’t have to witness these horrific acts.
And educate people about what Islam really is. Tell your friends about
the open letter by Islamic scholars. It’s vital people know that Islam is
a religion of peace. It’s not what groups like ISIS say, nor should it be
demonised by the tabloid press in the UK.
