How do politicians use propaganda to
sway public opinion ?
Watch
the following political campaign
commercial and explain how it is propaganda
Definition:
The spreading of information,
especially in a biased or misleading way,
in order to promote a political cause,
candidate, or point of view.
Origins
during WWII
mobilization
There
are several
different techniques
that are used.
Giving
people or things
a bad label to make us
reject/condemn them
without examining the
facts.
“Inexperienced,” “not
ready to lead”
“Un-American,” “unpatriotic”
Using
words which sound good but really
don’t say much.
“Forward”
“Believe in America”
“I’ll invest in the middle class.”
Associating something respected with a
candidate.
Wearing an American flag lapel pin
Speaking in front of American flags or a group
of veterans
A well-known and/or well-respected person
express his
support for a candidate.
Celebrity endorsements
Colin Powell’s endorsement of Obama
A candidate pretending to be one of “the
people” or “the folks.”
Going to NASCAR
races, county fairs
“I grew up middle class.”
Telling only one side of the
story (either all good or all bad)
about the candidate.
“Under Obama our debt has
increased to $16 trillion…”
Making
it
seem as though “everyone” is voting for a
candidate
Voting based on polls or # or types of people at
rallies
“Teachers for Obama,” “Hunters for Romney”
Using
extremes and hyperboles to frighten
someone into voting for a certain candidate.
“We can’t afford 4 more years”
Daisy Campaign- Johnson
You
will each be given a technique.
Find a political ad on YouTube that uses
this technique (and any others).
Be prepared to share it with the class and
tell us how the technique is used.
