World War I Propaganda
Why did soldiers fight for their
country during WWI?
• Most European countries had
conscription laws.
– Conscription = required military service.
• Other people joined for other reasons,
which we will go over today.
Propaganda Posters
• In one month, Europe went from the
edge of war (assassination of FF) to a
world war.
– Massive drive to recruit soldiers for the war.
• Were created for many reasons…
– Today we are going to concentrate on posters that
tried to get young men to join the military.
– Obviously, there were many other kinds of
propaganda in WWI.
Bandwagon
• Everyone else is doing it, and so should
you.
Direct Order
• Giving a command.
Emotional Appeal
• Drawing on people’s emotions (positive
or negative).
Demonization
• Making an enemy look evil.
Fear
• Scaring people into action.
The United States…
• Eventually joined the war.
– We’ll get there, don’t worry.
