Fighting will take place
all over the world
1. Excitement
2. Alliances
3. Use of colonies
Reason 1: Excitement For War
*Europe had been excited about going
to war
1. Ideas of glory and
adventure
2. Propaganda helped
spread these ideas.

biased and misleading) used to
promote or publicize a particular

Not a Six Month War
-After the 1st year, Great Powers
realized this would not be a
quick war
-Enthusiasm for the war starts
to drop.
*Gov. ramps up propaganda
and silences dissenters.
Reasons for a Slow War
1) Trench warfare- a
slow process with little
land advancement.
2) New weapons of
war- better devices for
killing and fighting
(machine gun, poison
gas)
3) Two-front warmultiple battles all
over Europe.
Reason 2: Alliances
Soon after the war started, other countries
joined in the fighting:
Some joined because they were allies or wanted to
be allies
The Ottoman Turks and Bulgaria joined the Central powers
Italy and Japan joined the Allied Powers.
Central Powers
Germany
Austria-Hungary
Ottoman Turks
Bulgaria
Allied Powers
Russia
Great Britain
France
Italy
Japan
Reason 3: Colonies
The use of colonial armies for fighting
also made the war world wide.
They either wanted to or were made to
join by their imperial power.
G.B. used soldier from India, Kenya, South
Africa
The Indian people were influenced by Mohandas Gandhi
to fight with the Brits.
Germany used soldiers from China
These new countries did not really give
either side a military advantage, it just
was a new place to continue the
fighting.
Russia Needs Help!
The Gallipoli Campaign- new Allied strategy.
Focuses on defeating Turks.
Get control of the Dardanelles- a narrow sea straight that led
to the capital of the Ottomans, Constantinople.
Use the Dardanelles to get a supply line to Russia through the
Black Sea.
Failure at Gallipoli
The Gallipoli Campaign ended at a
stalemate
Both side had dug trenches and could not
defeat each other
The Allies had to retreat
Allies in Turkey
Allies failed in Turkey, but
they continued to look for
new ways to destroy the
Ottoman Turks.
They helped Arab nations
get independence form
Turkey
Lawrence of Arabia: British
officer urged princes to
revolt against the Ottomans
