control the German people

How did the Nazis

population?

• They were originally Hitler’s bodyguards.
• They were in charge of the police and the
work camps set up in Germany to ‘re-educate’
opponents.
• They intimidated any opponents of Hitler

The Gestapo were the secret police
They tapped phones and read mail.
They used thousands of informers.
Anyone suspected of being against The
Nazis was arrested.
Spies and Informers
• They informed The Gestapo of anyone
who spoke out against The Nazis.
• Each street or block of flats had its
own informer.
• Sometimes children spied on their own
families.
The Camps
• The prisons soon were full so the SS opened reeducation camps.
• These were not yet death camps but places to
send troublemakers to punish them
• Jews, homosexuals, political prisoners and other
groups were taken here
• The treatment was so bad, fear made most people
cooperate with the Nazis
