Lesson starter:
Write down three things you know about
living in Nazi Germany.
• Do you think life for a normal person in
Nazi Germany would have been much
different from life for a normal person
on the Home Front?
• Justify your answer…
Learning Intention
• Understand how the Nazis controlled
people’s everyday lives in Germany
• Analyse how the Nazis maintained

• Evaluate the effectiveness of rebellion
against the Nazis.

• I can work as part of a group to
remember how the Nazis affected the
lives of 4 particular groups using a
‘Stand and Deliver’.
• I can explain to my group how the Nazis
affected one particular group in Nazi
Germany.
• I can create a diary entry using my
knowledge about life in Nazi Germany

• Watch the following video clip and note
down any good things about life in Nazi
Germany.

Germany?
‘Stand and Deliver’
• To learn the information on how the Nazis
affected people’s lives, we are going to do a
‘Stand and Deliver’.
• Workers – Number 1
• Social Life – Number 2
• Young People – Number 3
• Jews – Number 4
• You have got 4 minutes to learn the
information on your sheet – you can only sit
down when everyone has learnt the information
– REMEMBER you need to teach the rest of
your group what you have learnt!
‘Stand and Deliver’
• Now return to your group.
• Write the heading ‘Nazi Germany’ in the
middle of your mind map.
• All four members of the group are going to
teach everyone else their information – fill
in your mind map with the information you
are given.
• There will be 6 headings in total, make sure
you have enough room! The other 2 (Nazi
Control and Rebellion) will be added at the
end.
For Workers…
• The Nazi party achieved full
employment.
• This meant nobody in Germany was
unemployed.
• Jobs were created in public works,
the military and factories.
• The ‘Strength Through Joy’ (KDF)
movement entitled workers to
special discounts and treats.
• These included discounts on
theatre tickets, sports facilities
and even cheap holidays.

Social Life…
• Public transport was vastly
improved with new efficient
rail systems and autobahn.
• Crime rates dropped
enormously.
• American jazz and blues
music was banned as Hitler
thought it was ‘un-German’.
• People had access to a wider
range of public facilities e.g.
for sport.
For Young People…
• Schools were ‘Nazified’, meaning
young people could only learn
Nazi approved content.
• The Hitler Youth and League of
German Maidens were set up
which were made compulsory in
1939.
• Both education and youth groups
focused on discipline, sport and
promoting Nazi ideas e.g. Aryan
supremacy, hatred of Jews…
For Jews…
• Jews were segregated in schools, public
facilities and had to wear a Star of
David.
• Kristalnacht: Jewish shops and people
attacked by Hitler’s SA.
• Anti-Jewish propaganda in posters and
schools.
• Jews sent to concentration camps and
made to work before eventually being
killed in gas chambers.
• Auschwitz: Estimated 1.5 million Jews
killed.

Nazi Control…
• Gestapo (secret police) spied on
normal people.
• No freedom of speech, arrested
for speaking against Nazis.
• Censorship in newspapers and
education.
• All political opponents arrested
and sent to concentration camps.
• Friends and neighbours would
report each other through fear.

Rebellion…
• Edelweiss Pirates: Group of youths
who would gather, play jazz, dress
informally and opposed members of
Hitler Youth.
• If caught they were sent to
concentration camps and heavily
punished.
• There were a number of
assassination attempts made on
Hitler.
• 20th of July Plot: Hitler injured by
bomb in Wolf’s Lair.
