ERMS Project Overview
• Connects hospitals and ambulances
• Assists EMTs
– efficient and beneficial decisions during transport
– multiple patients
– specialty equipment or faculty
• Hospitals preparation
– arrival of patients
– monitor a patient’s condition
• More readily available compared to conventional
methods
• Hospitals follow patient trends

Hospitals
Handhelds
•Use ERMS Hospital Software
•View Hospital Status Information
•Update database for current status
•Upload patient information to Hospital
•View incoming Patient information
Hospital 2
Server Side (Dedicated)
• Manages all available resources defined
by various hospitals.
• Manages patient information from EMTs
out in the field.
• Calculates and recommends hospitals for
EMTs.
• Designed to handle any number of
hospitals and ambulances on one server.

System Overview (Hospital)
• ERMS allows the hospital to remotely monitor a
patient’s vital signs allowing them to adequately
prepare for the incoming patient.
System Overview (Hospital)
• Hospitals Also have the ability to inform EMTs in
the field of what personnel and resources are
available at their facility at any given time.
System Overview (Ambulance)
• EMTs out in the field will use a PDA or
other mobile device to utilize ERMS.
• All interfaces implemented via the web on
EMT client side allowing any mobile
device with internet access to be used.
• EMTs can find certain hospital equipment
and faculty by use of their mobile device.
Scenario
• Lets say we are an ambulance crew that
just picked up 2 patients from a car
accident. 1 patient is in critical condition,
the other has minor wounds.
• First we evaluate the resources at all
surrounding hospitals, then we will see if
there are any specialized trauma hospitals
in our area.
Scenario (cont…)
Entering System – We
can see two hospitals
with enough trauma
beds available.
Because we have a
critical patient, we want
a trauma specialized
facility.
We find only one area
hospital meeting our
needs.
Scenario (cont…)
Now we tell the hospital we are
arriving with two patients, one
serious…and one minor.
Baystate Medical Center follows our
progress.
Technology Used
• Programming Languages
– ASP
– C#
• Hardware
– 802.11b
– PDA
• Miscellaneous
– SQL Server for Database
Summary
• All this functionality and more is possible
but we were limited due to a lack of
resources.
• Future:
– Automated data collection
– Incorporate location awareness
– Advanced calculation of optimal hospital
