drunk turned to the priest and asked, "Say,

We see something odd in this verse right off
the top. There’s a mention of the type of
stones that are used in the temple.

why it was
mentioned.
The type of stones
that were used in the
second temple for
the major part of it’s
construction was
Herodian stone.

not a type of rock.
The type of rock
was Jerusalem
stone taken from
nearby quarries.
Herodian stone
was the type of cut
of the stone.

stone. It has a very
particular cut to it.
It very characteristic
of the work that
Herod had done and
a constant reminder
to the Jews who had
built it.

the stones etc used in
His Temple either.
It was His Father’s house
because it had remnants
of the original layout,
but it wasn’t exactly His
blueprints.

was made from G-d’s
blueprints but
Herod’s Temple
wasn’t.
There’s a principle

given to the un-Saved.
So all the hype you hear
about the “Temple
Faithful”, the group that
says they have the blue

the temple.

Some people get confused with this
translation. Yeshua wasn’t sitting against the
Temple here.
The Temple is NOT on the Mt of Olives.

4 "Tell us, when will this happen, and what
sign will there be when all these things are
about to come to an end?“
So since Yeshua is prophesying here, they ask
Him to tell about the end of the world.

5 Jesus began to say to them, "See that no
one deceives you.
This is an Hebraism: “Do not be deceived”.
That means “listen carefully”

he,' and they will deceive many.
Two things are being said here. One is that
people will come saying they are the Messiah
and others will come speaking in His Name.
And we’ve talked about this before…

Speaking in one’s “name” is a rabbinical term.
If you were a Disciple and ordained by your
Rabbi, you could then speak in that Rabbi’s
name.
This was very very common. In Rabbinical
literature from that time you see it every few
pages.

So Yeshua was saying not only that people
would come saying they were the Messiah but
also that others would be quoting Him who
did NOT have the authority to do so as they
had NOT been ordained by Him with the
leaning on of hands.

7 When you hear of wars and reports of wars
do not be alarmed; such things must happen,
but it will not yet be the end.
This verse is often misinterpreted.
Prophecy teachers today teach that when you
hear about a whole bunch of wars, that’s the
End Days.

todays world and say
that’s proof that
we’re near the end.
However, that is NOT
the proof.

8 Nation will rise against nation and kingdom
against kingdom. There will be earthquakes
from place to place and there will be famines.
These are the beginnings of the labor pains.

Sorry but that’s been experienced since the
beginning of the fall of man.
Yeshua is saying here, don’t be worried when
you hear about all these wars and rumors of
wars. That’s not the time to fret.

In this next verse, Yeshua says something here
very very interesting and important for
Messianics to understand…
9 "Watch out for yourselves. They will hand
you over to the courts. You will be beaten in
synagogues. You will be arraigned before

me speak about this
verse before, but it’s
worth repeating.
You’ve heard me say
many times that the
sect of the
Nazarenes was
exactly that, a sect.

A section of Judaism
NOT a new religion
called “Christianity”.

has a lot of meaning.
If you interpret it in
context, he was saying
that in the last days, His
Body will be connected
to Judaism or…

People of The Way

a Masters in Jewish
Studies, a PHD in Second
Temple History, a Dr of
Phil. in Religion and

• He spent 12 summers in
Israel and studied at the
American Institute of
Holy Land Studies on
HarZion.
• He is both a Fellow and a
Scholar at the Oxford
Society of Scholars having
written over 80 courses
for Bible Colleges in over
18 countries.

• As I’ve mentioned
before there were
many sects of
Judaism.
• According to Dr.
Ron Moseley
there were nearly
30 of them.

• The Talmud says
that 24 of these
were at one time
or another
considered to be
outside of the
mainstream of
Judaism.

• Besides the more
well known sects of
the Pharisees and
Sadducees and the
Essenes were
others such as the
Ebionites,
Boethusians
Genistae and the
Meristae (The
Dividers).

• St. Justin Martyr
lists many of
these as well
• All different then
each other but still
Jewish.
• The Nazarenes
were also a Jewish
sect.

• If it hadn’t have
been for the Bar
Khoba revolt in 132
AD we’d all still be
worshipping
together in the
Synagogues with
our Jewish
brethren.
• That being said…

• the various smaller
sects would often
be persecuted by
the larger more
orthodox sects.
While at the same
time still
considering them to
be Jewish.

• So it’s really no surprise
that Shaul (Paul) would
go out and persecute the
Notzreem.

• Yeshua Himself even addresses this in
Mathew 10:17
• 17"Be on your guard against men; they will
hand you over to the local councils and flog
you in their synagogues.”

• Notice it says, in their
synagogues.
• Guess what? Jews
didn’t flog non Jews.
• They didn’t go out and
kidnap non Jews for
breaking
Commandments and
haul them into their
synagogues.

• Matter of fact, the
Mishna says that nonJews are not under the
same Laws (and thus
they could not be
closer to G-d).
• If a Gentile converted
they then became
subject to the same
Laws as the Jews.

gentile that
converted was no
longer to be called a
Gentile, that was
forbidden.

• Now, I know that most
Churches say that the
First Church was very
different because
Yeshua performed
miracles and no one
else did in those days.
• But that is not true.

• There were many First
Century miracle
workers let’s look at 2
of them…
• Honi haMagael
• He lived in the First
Century.
• He was a well known
Jewish scholar

• He was famous for his
ability to successfully
pray for rain.
• On one occasion when
G-d did not send rain
well into the winter
Honi drew a circle in
the dust, stood inside
it, and informed God
that he would not
move until it rained.
Miracle Workers
• When it began to drizzle,
Honi, in true Jewish style,
told God that he was not
satisfied and expected
more rain!
• It then began to pour. He
explained that he wanted
a calm rain, at which point
the rain calmed to a
normal calm rain.
• After this incident he was
given the nickname, Honi
the Circle Drawer.

• This was before
Yeshua was here.
• Honi was a well known
scholar and pious man

• He was almost
excommunicated by
the High Jewish Court
for the way he talked to
G-d so irreverently
(though we see hints of
that with some other
Biblical characters).
• However, the brother of
the Queen excused
him, saying that he was
Honi and had a special
relationship with God.

• Another Rabbi named
Hanina BenDosa was
also famous for his
miracles.
• The son of Rabbi
Gamaliel II (grandson
of Paul’s Rabbi) had
become ill and Rabbi
Gamaliel II sent a
messenger to Rabbi
Hanina.

• When Rabbi Hanina
heard what had
happened he went out
and prayed.
• When he came back he
told the messenger that
the boy had been
healed.
• The messenger had
some doubt and he
wrote down the exact
time.

• When he got back to
Rabbi Gamaliel II he
found that the boy was
well and asked Rabbi
Gamaliel II what time
the healing had
occurred.
• It was the exact same
time as what he had
noted down before.

• It was after
Yeshua’s time, by
about a generation.
• But note that Rabbi
Gamaliel II trusted
Rabbi Hanina
Miracle Workers
• And this Rabbi
(Gamaliel II) had some
very serious
connections with the
Messianic Movement
and Yeshua’s Disciples.
• His grandfather had
saved many of the
Disciples including
Peter. (Acts 5:33)

• He was related to Rabbi
Eliezar who was condemned
for being a Believer in
Yeshua.
• Also notice that Rabbi Akiva
was killed for his
participation in the Bar
Khoba War.

• A war where anyone who
had joined that force had
to declare Bar Kochba the
Messiah.
• The Messianics wouldn’t
do that and they lived…
• Why was Rabbi Gamaliel
II still alive after the
Romans defeated them?

• He was the first person
to lead the Sanhedrin
as Nasi after the fall of
the second temple.
• Makes you wonder if
he too was a Believer.
• If he was a Believer and
trusted Rabbi Hanina’s
faith, it’s possible that
Hanina was a Believer
in Yeshua too.

• I’m not saying
they all were.
But the more
you read about
the ancient
Rabbis, you start
seeing more and
more
connections like
these.

• I know for sure that
all the Jews
weren’t the bad
guys like the
Church has taught
for 2,000 years.
• Maybe the Church
is also wrong about
many of these
Rabbis.

• Back to the miracle
workers…
• So there were Miracle
workers in the First
Century.
• But there were certain
miracles they were
never able to perform.

• They could cure a
blind man but not one
who was blind from
birth.
• They could heal many
diseases but not
leprosy.
• They could even cast
out demons, but not a
mute demon.

• Yeshua however did
all these things.
• This sheds light on
Matt 11:4-6 when
John the Immerser
(incorrectly called John
The Baptist)
had his messengers
ask Yeshua if He was
“The One to come”

• Yeshua answered…
• “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the
lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are
raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to
them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be
offended in me.” Matt 11:4-6

• He probably answered
more like…
• “I cured the blind from
birth, I cleansed the
lepers and caused the
mute to speak.”
• That would’ve been a
direct Messianic answer
to John The Immerser’s
question.
Are you the Messiah?
• While we’re on this
passage of Scripture
let’s take a look at
what the Sanhedrin's
response would’ve
been once they heard
that someone was
claiming to be the
Messiah.
Are you the Messiah?
• By Law the
Sanhedrin was to
investigate the
situation in two
stages: The first
stage was called
the “Stage of
Observation."
Are you the Messiah?
• A delegation was
formed to
investigate only
by way of
observation.
These delegates
could come from
a variety of towns
and cities.
Are you the Messiah?
• This delegation was
to observe what
was being said,
what was being
done, and what was
being taught. They
were not permitted
to ask any
questions or raise
any objections.
Are you the Messiah?
• After a period of
observation, they
were then to go
to Jerusalem,
report to the
Sanhedrin and
give a verdict…
Are you the Messiah?
• …was the movement
significant, or was the
movement
insignificant? If the
movement was
decreed to be
insignificant, the
matter would be
dropped like an
unkosher hotdog.
Are you the Messiah?
• But if the
movement was
declared to be
significant, there
would, then, be a
second stage of
investigation…
called the “Stage
of Interrogation."
Are you the Messiah?
• In this stage, they
would interrogate the
individual or members
of the movement. This
time, they would ask
questions and raise
objections to discover
whether the claims
should be accepted or
rejected.
Are you the Messiah?
• We see this play out exactly in the Brit Hadasha in Luke 5…
• Vs 17…
• 17. Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of
Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem.
• 18Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to take him into
the house to lay him before Jesus. 19When they could not find a way to do
this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on
his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of
Jesus.
• 21. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying (this word is
not in the Greek), Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can
forgive sins, but God alone?
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them,
What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be
forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
Are you the Messiah?
• First… so many
delegates came
out that the local
people couldn’t
even get the
paralyzed man
into see Yeshua.
Are you the Messiah?
• Then we see He read
their thoughts and
their hearts because
the delegates weren’t
saying anything to
Him at that point.
• They were in the
“Stage of
Observation”
Are you the Messiah?
• Then, later on in
Scripture they come back
and interrogate Him as
per Jewish Law.
• That’s what this passage
is about!
• See if we understand the
times, the culture and
the Laws of First Century
Judaism, things start to
become clear.
We are not “The Church”
• I’m sorry to say,
but most of
today’s Church is
very unclear.
• They’re foggy
because they’ve
left the Jews out
of the very Jewish
book called the
Bible.
We are not “The Church”
• Messianic Judaism is
not another Church.
• There’s lots of
Churches out there,
that’s not what we
are here.
• We’re a Messianic
Synagogue and
there’s only one of
these in this valley so
far.
We are not “The Church”
• Messianic Judaism
believes that Yeshua is the
Messiah but we don’t
accept any paganism in
our walk of faith.
• We teach that the Law is
still in effect and that if we
break it, we fall under the
curse of sin
We are not “The Church”
• Galatians 3:10 (Dr. David Stern Translation)
• 10 For everyone who depends on legalistic observance
of Torah commands lives under a curse, since it is
written, "Cursed is everyone who does not keep on
doing everything written in the Scroll of the Torah."
We are not “The Church”
• We see it like the
Apostle Paul.
• He said the Law is “holy
just and good”… not
done away with as the
Church teaches.
• Paul even said he loved
the Law.
• The Church says they
also love the Law but
they then ignore it.
We are not “The Church”
• You can’t ignore something you love!
