Early Christians in Rome
Quickly spread among romans, by 300 nearly 10% of pop Christian
Leaders feared of new growth/arrested and killed many . Christians
viewed these people as Martyrs – people who die for their faith
A critical moment was when the Emperor Constantine converted,
Prayed for help in defeating 3 rivals @ river Tiber, as he prayed saw a
cross dream “in this sign, conquer”, put the cross on all his mens shields
and won the battle. Gave all credit to Christian God.
Made Christianity an official religion in Rome – result was that
polytheism gradually disappeared

Christianity became more than buildings but support communities, led
to complex organization & ceremonies developed by different parts that
inspired peoples faith and felt closer to Jesus
i.e. Eucharist – eat bread/drink wine in memory of Jesus’
death/resurrection, baptism as admittance into faith
As church expanded priests, bishops, patriarchs’ emerged claiming
spiritual authority to run church
Many Christians believed Peter was founder of Roman church and was
the first bishop, future popes – Bishops of Rome/leaders of the church ,
seen as Peter’s spiritual heirs

resources and military caused huge economic crisis

Robbery/piracy/fear of travel and trade, Rome printed more coins with
copper and lead into the silver, people refused to accept lead to
inflation – dramatic rise in prices

Diocletian and Constantine rose to power to give the empire another
two centuries of life
Diocletian changed empire to a complete monarchy , which is??
Society became rigid order, such as sons follow trade of fathers,
peasants remain on land they farm , what is the problem with this? TPS
Created Western and Eastern Roman empire, allowing a “Caesar” to
rule other half
New tax reforms and commercial/manufacture activities geared to help

Constantine and Fall
Constantine won over as leader through battle, his father took on Diocletain
in battle
Took over same aspect of life that Diocletain did, two major changes
#1 – supported Christianity #2 – built a new capital (Constantinople) moved
it there bc it was richer than the west side, on site of tiny village of
Byzantium
Huns destroyed Europe, frightening other tribes to attack Rome
Vandals from North Africa , name became famous for destruction
At this time Attila and the Huns destroyed most of the Roman empire
before being persuaded by pope Leo I not to destroy Rome itself
Western Roman empire died and controlled by tribes, Eastern empire
survived for centuries more, but other cultures crept in , officially referred
to as Byzantine Empire
