The Rise
• Christian Church came to be known as the
Eastern Orthodox Church

• Poor leadership divided the empire
• The Roman Catholic Church and Eastern
Orthodox Church excommunicated each other

Christianity
– Excommunicate – To remove from the Church
• 1453 – Mehmed II conquers Constantinople,
forming the Ottoman Empire
