Jesus
What did Jesus
really look like?
Christians believe that Jesus was the messiah, or savior
that Jews predicted come to Earth to restore the
kingdom of the Jews. Christians believe He was the
Son of God.
The Spread of Christianity
The Apostle Paul
Paul was a Jew born in Tarsus (now in Turkey) who was
a key figure in spreading Christian teaching through
much of the Mediterranean region. He spread the
Christian faith to Jews as well as non-Jews (gentiles).
Paul died some time in the A.D. 60’s during the reign of
Nero. Christian tradition says that Paul was beheaded
for his controversial teachings.
The Emperor Constantine
Constantine moved the capital from Rome
to Byzantium (Constantinople) and issued
The Edict of Milan to protect Christians.
Diocletian
Diocletian tried to
strengthen a
declining Empire
by dividing the
lands into two
parts, each ruled
by a co-Emperor,
and by doubling
the size of the
army.
He later
subdivided the
Empire even
farther
Diocletian was also the last major persecutor of
Christians. He eventually ordered the execution of those who
refused to worship traditional Roman gods.
The Fall of Rome – A.D. 476
Already on its last legs, the last
Roman Emperor, a 14-year-old
known as Romulus Augustulus
(or Augustus) was forced to
abdicate the throne by a German
soldier named Odoacer. The
Eastern Roman Empire, known as
the Byzantine Empire, would
survive for almost another 1,000
years (until 1453).
