Aim: How do the beliefs of
Judaism and Christianity differ?

Disciples- followers
New Testament- is one of two parts of the Bible (Christian’s
holy book) and the other part being the Old Testament
Crucifixion-This was a Roman custom of nailing someone to
a cross and letting them die of exposure
Martyr- willing victim for a cause
Messiah-savior promised by God in the Old Testament to the
Jews
Read-Aloud
• As you read, highlight the vocabulary from
the Do Now.
• As you read, decide which type of change
Jesus made a
• Social (dealing with people)
• Political (dealing with government) or
• Religious (dealing with beliefs and
religion)
Student Pair Work
• Read the questions First!
• Read Documents with a partner. Alternate
reading. Answer questions that follow in
complete sentences.
Debrief
• Students will take notes and fill in the
blanks as we read the following slides.
Notes on Christianity
I. Early Christianity
A. Persecution under the Roman
Empire
1. Christians who refused to abandon
their faith were often tortured and
executed.
2. Crucifixion and burning at the stake
were common forms of Punishment for
Christians.
B. Monotheistic Religion
1. Christians refused to acknowledge the many
different Roman gods (12).
2. Emperors believed that without Christians
sacrificing to Roman gods, the god would no
longer support and protect the Roman Empire.
C. Message of Love and Non-Violence
1. Many Christians refuse to fight in the Roman
Army because teachings did not allow them to
kill others.
2. Christians were viewed as traitors to the
Roman Empire that protected them.
D. Refusal to Worship Emperors
1. Christians believed that they should only
acknowledge only one God and refused to
recognize the Emperor as God.
2. Emperors views Christians as
untrustworthy and enemies of the state to be
executed for disloyalty.
