have participated in all the
Commonwealth Olympic games
since 1978.

THE FLAG OF CYPRUS
The flag of Cyprus came into
use on August 16 1960. It
was designed by a Turkish
Cypriot. The flag has a map
of Cyprus on a while
background. There are also 2
olive branches on the bottom
which are the symbols of
peace. The olive branches
mean peace between the
Turkish and Greek
communities living in
Cyprus.
Also the orange/copper color
of the country refers to the
huge copper ore deposits on
the island.
TRADITIONAL DISHES & FOOD
The people of Cyprus eat a lot
Mediterranean foods. It is similar to the
Greek diet.
One of their most popular dishes is the
Souvlaki.
They also eat a lot of dips like
hummus, tarama, tahini and tzatziki
with yummy pita bread.
They also love to eat kalamata olives,
beans, salads and a yummy cheese
called haloumi.
Another popular dish is the Mousaka.
It is baked lamb and eggplant covered
with bechamel sause.
For sweets they eat Loukoumi. We
know it as Turkish Delight.

There is lots of sunshine in Cyprus. They have sunshine 11 months of the year.
Cyprus is well known for its beautiful beaches and holiday destinations.

Greco-Roman Theatre
The Greco Roman theatre is found in Kourion, Lemesos and was built in the 2nd century B.C.
When Kourion used to be an important city.
These days this theatre is used for out door musicals and theatrical performances.
This place used to be a private Roman villa and people used to live there. Now people can
visit it and look at the ruins. It is known for its beautiful mosaic floors.

Kolossi Castle
Kolossi Castle is found in Kolossi,
Lemesos and was fully built in the 15th
Century.
Initially the castle was built by the
Knights of saint John in 1210. It was
the place where the King of England,
Richard conquered Cyprus in 1191 and
married Berengria of Navarre and
made her the Queen of England.
In the 15th century it belonged to the
knights of Saint John of Jerusalem.
A Famous Festival
The International Festival of Ancient Greek
Drama is a theatre festival that is held in
Cyprus every year during their summer. It
began in 1996 and it attracts lots of
different theatre companies from around
the world.

Andreas competed in the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow and won a silver medal
in the sport Judo.
To prepare himself for the games he spent lots of time training in different places of the
world like in the USA, Israel and Italy for a few years before the games began.
He also worked with a strength and conditioning professional for 3 yearts to help him
become fitter and stronger for the games. She also helped Andreas with his diet.

Judo
The word Judo means “ the gentle way” and was created in Japan in 1882 by a man named
Jigoro Kano. Judo was introduced into the Olympic games in 1964.
Judo is a modern martial art. The aim is to throw your opponent to the ground
or immobilising them with armlocks, holds or strangles.
