Cumulative Dictionary Guidelines
• From now on, YOU will be responsible
for building your own vocabulary lists.
• Beginning today, you will have a
separate section in your notebook for
any new vocabulary words you
encounter during any of our readings.
When you are reading and you come
across a word you don’t know, write it
down in your dictionary.
Guidelines continued…
• On your notebook paper:
– Write the word
– Write the definition of the word IN YOUR
OWN WORDS
– Write down the context in which the
selection uses the word
– Write your own sample sentence that uses
the word
• ALL 4 parts must be completed to get
credit for the word. NO partial credit
will be given.
Example
1.
A. Word: Ignominy
B. Definition: It means embarrassment
or shame.
C. Context: In the Scarlet Letter, Hester
Prynne stood on the scaffold in
ignominy because of her adultery.
D. Sentence: I drowned in ignominy after
everyone found out I lied to my best
friend.
Guidelines continued…
• Make sure you keep this dictionary up
to date, because new words maybe
used on a vocabulary quizzes or tests.
• REMEMBER!
– Any word from the reading assignments
(from the unit or units covered by this
dictionary) is fair game, so read carefully!
– The dictionary will be picked up
periodically for a grade.
