Figuring out an unknown word
can be as easy as being familiar
with another word that is related
to it or in its word family.
IDENTIFYING CONNECTED WORDS
Connected Words
• Connected words or word families are groups
of related words.
• Words can be grouped into two families.
1) Those similar in form;
2) Those whose meanings are related.
Connected Words
• Similar in form
– These type of words have more to do with spelling
than meaning.
– Knowing words similar in form can help with
pronunciation.
– For example, words ending in –ight.
• Light, bright, tight, slight, blight
Connected Words
• Related in meaning
– These type of words have a similar root.
– The reader can rely on prior knowledge to figure
out the meaning of a unfamiliar word.
Word family: Related in meaning
Identifying Connected Words
I will actuate the plan once I receive all the
information.
• The reader may know that act means to move
or execute.
• The reader’s prior knowledge can help define
actuate to mean to put into action or motion.
