Spelling “rule” of the week:
For a one-syllable word ending in a
single consonant that is NOT
preceded by a vowel, do not double
the final consonant before adding
–ing, -ed, -er, or –est.
Exceptions: (related rules to be learned in
future weeks)
Focus Rule Words:
1) reaping (reap + ing)
2) pleaded (plead + ed)
3) wilder (wild + er)
4) neatest (neat + est)
5) folded (fold + ed)
Academic Verbs:
6) establish to found (as in a new business) or
show to be true
Let’s establish a strong thesis first.
7) exemplify to typify, depict, or show by
example
The character’s wittiness is exemplified when
he makes smart comebacks.
8) indicate to show or be a sign of
His comebacks indicate his wittiness.
Commonly misspelled words:
9) occasion (two c’s)
10) judgment (drop the e in judge)
11) license (c before s)
Roots/prefixes/suffixes:

omni = all
12) phonetic related to sound
13) telephone carries sound far
14) evidence clues you find by looking
closely
15) omniscient one who knows (sci) all
(as in an omniscient narrator)
Commonly confused words:
16) cloths the plural of “cloth” (fabric)
