Five to ten spellings a
week to learn
(starting after half
term)
KS1 (Year 1 and 2)

10 spellings a week
KS2 (Year 3, 4, 5 and 6)
 Word
lists which give a guide to the words
children should be able to spell confidently
in each age range.
 Lots
of different spelling patterns for the
same sound e.g. Late, weight, great
 Silent letters e.g. wrong
 Lots of words are not phonetic…they can’t be
sounded out
 It can slow down children’s writing or limit
want they want to say
 BUT!!!!
85% of the English language is
predictable…if we practise the rules
 Sounding
 E.g.
out using letter sounds, not names.

 Make it fun!

lots!!! Discuss spellings of words, usual

 E.g. what is surprising about the word
photograph?
 Encourage
looking more closely at words


