Five to ten spellings a
week to learn
(starting after half
term)
KS1 (Year 1 and 2)
10 spellings a week
KS2 (Year 3, 4, 5 and 6)
Word
lists which give a guide to the words
children should be able to spell confidently
in each age range.
Lots
of different spelling patterns for the
same sound e.g. Late, weight, great
Silent letters e.g. wrong
Lots of words are not phonetic…they can’t be
sounded out
It can slow down children’s writing or limit
want they want to say
BUT!!!!
85% of the English language is
predictable…if we practise the rules
Sounding
E.g.
out using letter sounds, not names.

word related games: I-spy, Hangman,
Boggle, Scrabble, Odd One Out.
Make it fun!

lots!!! Discuss spellings of words, usual
spellings.
E.g. what is surprising about the word
photograph?
Encourage
looking more closely at words
Put
the word in the context of a sentence.
Helps to reinforce spelling and meaning.
E.g. I’m going to their house after school.
How many words can
you find in the grid?
Can you find a 4
letter word?
Can you put that
word in a sentence?
How could we make
this easier? Harder?
Which letters
couldn’t you use and
why?
