Epidermis is the top
layer; the layer you
can see
It’s made of a layer of
dead skin cells
Produces melanin
Interesting facts….
• Your Amazing Skin
• One square centimeter of skin contains:
• 100 perspiration glands
• 3,000,000 cells
• 3,000 sensory cells at the ends of
nerve fibers
• One yard of blood vessels
• 15 sebaceous glands
• Four yards of nerves
• The Science of the Skin
• Your skin is:
• Your largest organ
• A vital component of your immune
system
• A powerful eliminator of toxins
• Epidermis
• Skin cells:
• • Renew and exfoliate every 24 to 40 days
• Contain no direct blood supply or nerve
endings
• Dead skin carries
away bacteria
and germs
• Irreplaceable Moisture Complex
• Contains:
• Oxygen
• Nutrition (from moisture & oil glands)
• Moisture (perspiration) with Water
soluble vitamins
• Oil (sebum)
The Dermis
• Inner layer of skin
• Contains nerve and blood vessels
• Contains sweat glands, hair, and oil
glands
• Sweat comes out of openings called
pores
• Hair grows out of openings called
follicles
Question time…
• What is the epidermis made of?
• How do these dead cells protect?
