What do you know about the
human body?
SKIN
Integumentary System Parts
• Skin
• Follicles
• Oil Glands and Sweat Glands
• Hair
• Nails
SKIN
• largest organ in the body
• 12-15% of body weight
• surface area of 1-2 meters
• Melanin – pigment or color
cells that gives color to
skin and protects from sun
Layers of the Skin
• Epidermis – outermost, thinnest
layer (what we see). Outermost
cells of the epidermis are dead
• Dermis – layer right below the
epidermis that contains blood
vessels, sweat glands, oil glands,
hair follicles, nerves, and muscles
• Fatty Layer – insulates the body
(also called Subcutaneous layer)
FIVE Functions of Skin
1. Protection – protective covering
2. Sensory Response
3. Formation of Vitamin D – helps
absorb calcium
4. Regulates body temperature
5. Rids your body of waste (sweat –
water and salt)
• Skin functions in homeostasis
(maintaining body balance)
• Protection (barrier) - selectively
permeable – acts similar to cell membrane
• Regulation of body temperature - sweat
glands (perspiration)
• Sensory reception – pain, pressure (touch)
and temperature
• Prevents excess water loss
