•DANA is a cross-platform information retrieval system for web-based
multimedia for anthropological research and education.
•The goal of the DANA project is to create a network of distributed,
federated databases containing research quality digitized 3D models,
photographs, and other records of archaeological and cultural data.
•To the user seeking to access a broad variety of data, the client
application will seem to be a user-friendly interface to a single online
database. In actuality, the user will be searching multiple databases
located across the globe.

•The database browsing application currently supports servlet search
capabilities for JDBC 1.0 compliant databases.
• DANA currently displays VRML 97 and HotMedia 3D models, although
the addition of 3D file formats supported by the NCSA Java3D Portfolio is
planned.
• The distributed, federated network aspects of DANA, are in prototype
development
• DANA – to preserve rare and fragile human heritage materials and make
them available to scholars and students.
• Collections remain in place, institutions decide what to include.
• Institutions register themselves and the databases they wish to make
available
• Interoperability – a wide variety of commercial databases are supported.
• Institutions can be either clients or hosts.
• Conformance of tables and types is imposed by data entry tools,
supplied by the DANA project.
• Queries are by geographical unit and/or material type(s).
• Servelets query distributed databases and compile a single list of
references.
• Users select and view data without regard to where it is located.
• Data takes textual (metric, symbolic, provenience) and possibly
graphical and/or 3D form.
• Security of “pre-publication” data is being worked out.
• Users have a password protected “personal log”.
• Users have access to “digital calipers” supplied by the DANA project.
• Support for synchronous collaborative investigation is next.
• Support for classroom activities is to follow.

Starting The
Application
After installing Java Web Start and the
Java3D API, return to the application
launch page at:
http://atl.ndsu.edu/archive/dana.htm
Once there, click the “Launch DANA
Application” button.
Next a “login” box will appear, where
the user enters in his/her username &
password and then clicks the “Login”
button to start the DANA application.
New users may create a new login
and password by filling in the
username & password boxes and
then clicking the “Create” button.
The application will then ask for
the user’s name and e-mail
address.
