What FREE tools and programs do we
need to start?
1. Tex Implementation including its executable Files, Styles, and
Packages which is called LaTeX distribution.
2. A user-friendly writing environment (similar to the Microsoft
Word)
3. Java Runtime Environment
4. A Reference Editor (Like Endnote)
5. A PS (PostScript) interpreter
6. A PS and Pdf viewer
7. A Figure Drawing Tool (Like Office Tools)
8. A Formula Writing Tool
I have created a section in my LaTeX Blog to collect all tools very
conveniently. Please log on to www.mobilecloudfamily.com/latex
Java Runtime Environment
Install JRE from the Java Portal. Just Search Java
Runtime in Google and download the file matching
with your OS or follow the link
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Tex Implementation(Files, styles, …)
Tex Implementation or distribution
It is recommend to use:
2.9
The file size is more than 1 GB (but it has many good
things).
The latest release is 2.9 as of now.
Writing Environment or Editor
Now you can prepare and run a Tex manually, but is very
hectic job. You need a graphical user interface to do the job
easier.
Among all options, I personally do like TexStudio. The current
version is 2.5.2
BibTex Reference Manager
Jabref is a reference management software for
formatting lists of references
Mendeley is another free reference manager that I
prefer.
Post Script Interpreter
• PostScript (PS) is a computer language for creating Vector
graphics.
• Vector graphics is the use of points, lines, curves
and shapes based on mathematical expressions to
represent images.
• LaTeX uses vector graphics for higher quality
• JPEG is a bitmap file and so has low quality
• More information can be found at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/images/understandingvector-graphics-and-bitmap-images-HA001154903.aspx
You can install Ghost-script from its portal
Post Script Viewer
Install the postscript viewer from
There are quiet a lot of PS viewer, but I prefer Sumatra
which is open source and free. You can download from
my LaTex Blog or source forge
You can download from my website or the Sumatra
page in Source force website
Open Office: Figure Drawing Tool
• One of the simplest free tools to draw simple and easy
figures is OpenOffice.
• It may looks abit ugly, but it can help you.
• OpenOffice is the product of Apache.
• The latest version is 3.4.1
• The file size is 145 MB.
Congratulations….
You are ready to do Texing
